Tip of the Week

January 4, 2023

A pleasant journey for the new year

I’ve made a lot of goals through the years.

Some of them I accomplished, more than I care to admit I did not.

For example, just a few goals I have yet to accomplish (and maybe never will):

  • Winning a 5K race
  • Reading 100 books in a year
  • Learning to speak a foreign language fluently

Despite this lack of achievement, I still plan to set some goals for 2023. Because while I didn’t accomplish what I set out to achieve, I accomplished things I never expected:

  • The feeling of just finishing a 5K or half-marathon plus the people you meet, friends you make, and scenery you see along the way
  • The joy of discovering some universal truth or maybe just being entertained by book I never would have picked up if I wasn’t trying to read as much as possible
  • The satisfaction of being able to communicate with someone (albeit very roughly) in their native language.

What I’ve found, as have many others, I’m sure, is that the goal really isn’t the accomplishment.

It’s what you experience on your way to the goal.
