Although FAFSA simplification may make it easier for student and families to complete the form, they may have a couple of additional questions to answer.

The Department of Education is proposing that FAFSA applicants be asked to provide information about sex and race or ethnicity. As proposed, the demographic questions will be on the 2023-24 FAFSA in a pilot, voluntary survey format.

According to the June 13 Federal Register Notice, the pilot will allow the Department of Education to gather information and feedback before full implementation on the FAFSA form in the 2024-25 award year.

Comments on the demographic questions should be submitted electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal at www.regulations.gov by August 12, 2022.
