The independent student – relying on financial aid for help |

It's probably something you've known intuitively – but a report released on Tuesday confirms that independent students – what we once called "nontraditional" – encompass a growing number of students in the United States. The report, Understanding the New College Majority: The Demographic and Financial Characteristics of Independent Students and their Postsecondary Outcomes, finds that as of 2012, more than half of all U.S. college students were considered independent based on information provided on the FAFSA. The implications for financial aid and college success are significant as, as the report indicates, many independent students have limited financial resources, high levels of unmet financial need, and must balance work and school. For financial aid offices, the question arises as to what kinds of strategies can be put in place to meet the needs of independent students. Not every student completes a FAFSA, however. For many institutions, it may still be that traditional students are a majority. In any case, your institution likely has a high number of nontraditional or independent students who may need special or targeted communications or counseling.
